parrot

Parrot, common name applied to any of about 340 species of brightly coloured birds that make up the parrot family, Psittacidae. Groups of parrots that have their own common names include the cockatoos, lories, lovebirds, macaws, and parakeets. Parrots range in size from the buff-faced pygmy parrot of New Guinea, at 8.4 cm (3.3 in) long, to the hyacinth macaw of South America at 100 cm (40 in). A large part of the macaw's length is attributable to its long tail, and the bird is probably not as heavy as the very large (60 cm/24 in) but short-tailed palm cockatoo of New Guinea.
